UAE Relocation > Getting Around
Getting ThereThere are international airports in the most populated Emirates:
  • Abu Dhabi is 32 km or 20 miles east of the city.
  • Dubai is 5 km or 3 miles southeast of the city.
  • Sharjah is 10 km or 6 miles from the city.
  • Ras al-Khaimah is 15 km or 9 miles from the city.
You can hire a car or take a taxi from these airports to your destination. There is also bus service at the Abu Dhabi and Dubai airports. Many international hotels have shuttle service between the airport and their hotel.

Getting Around
Driving
Car hire agencies can be located at airports and hotels. Local car agencies often are less expensive. It is a good idea to arrive with an international driving license. Although not required in every Emirate, it is a necessity in Abu Dhabi. You may be provided a temporary local license.

There is an extensive well-maintained, high-quality network of roads connecting the Emirates. Some side or ancillary roads are not paved, but that is changing.

Driving is on the right. Traffic regulations are strictly enforced. There are speed cameras and the police have radar guns.

Bus
Within city buses are only found in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Long distance coaches are air-conditioned and go between Dubai and the other Emirates. Minibuses, seating 14, are also available.

Taxi
Taxis are readily available and are the easiest way to travel within the cities. They can be picked up on the street, from a hotel, or booked. Most taxis in urban areas are metered.

Long-distance taxis can be hired near the main bus station in Abu Dhabi. You may need to agree to the fare before departing as not all operate with a metre.
